ATV Buyer's Guide 2009

Meet the sweetest rides yet for getting anglers and hunters to exactly where they want to be

Honda - Big Red
CUB CADET - Volunteer 4X4D
Cub Cadet's latest offering is a diesel model that definitely merits a long second look. The heartbeat of the machine is a three-cylinder inline diesel set securely in a frame of welded three-inch tubular steel. Its 22-horsepower output is fed to the front end through a Hilliard differential providing on-the-fly shift to four-wheel drive and superb cornering; a mechanical differential drives the rear wheels. Add rack-and-pinion steering and independently adjustable suspension and eight-inch hydraulic discs and you have a comfortable, safe ride. Keep in mind that this machine is almost 10 feet long, 63 1/2 inches wide and weighs 1,750 pounds.

E-Z-GO - ST Express
For the versatility of transporting more than one passenger, check out E-Z-GO's latest addition to its lineup of side-by-sides. Powered by Subaru's 11-horse powerhouse (a 48-volt electric version is also offered), the ST comfortably seats the driver and three passengers with room to spare for daypacks and assorted gear. Of course, with an overall length of 11.5 feet and a curb weight of 1,200 pounds, transporting the machine from one spot to another could prove to be difficult. Look for it in blue/white and black/red.

HONDA - Big Red
For years, I've been wondering when Honda was going to offer a side-by-side of its own. Well, the time for wondering is over with the launch of the Big Red. In designing the Big Red, engineers started with an all-steel, one-piece chassis cradled front and back with fully independent, double-wishbone suspension. Riding low and central in this frame is a liquid-cooled powerhouse adapted from Honda's TRX 680 quad. From there on, Honda drew on its extensive know-how in the automotive field, giving the Big Red a hydraulic torque converter and clutch system that's as dependable as any on-road transmission. The automotive influence is readily apparent when you take it out for a spin-the ride is smooth, responsive and intuitive in every respect. Bear in mind that part of the Big Red's sure stance comes from its 64-inch width, making it too wide to ride most groomed ATV trails, or fit in the bed of most pickups.

JOHN DEERE - Gator CX
The Gator CX is a compact workhorse with plenty of power to get the job done. The coil-over-shock suspension, with a three-position adjustable preload front and back, ensures the ride is comfortable and safe. What's particularly advantageous in this side-by-side is its configuration-a scant 49 inches in width and a few inches short of 100 in length-which is truly appreciated when it comes time to store or transport the machine. Ground clearance under the foot platform is a bit skinny at just under five inches; that's something you might keep in mind when assessing the CX for your particular needs. Colour options? John Deere green, of course.

KAWASAKI - Mule 4010 Trans 4x4
At first glance, this model looks like a bigger version of the 3010 but with a tougher look. True, the 4010 is six inches longer and a bit wider than its predecessor, and it's restyled with oversized bumpers and fenders to give it a big-truck look. To truly appreciate the real improvements, however, you need to step closer. First, you'll find that Kawasaki has added an electric power-steering system that takes its cues from vehicle speed and torque sensors to feed the right amount of assist to the handlebars. Also unseen is the electronic fuel injection, which ensures reliable starts and provides a fast idle on warm-up. More visible are paired snorkel air intakes partway up the overhead roll frame, designed to flow clean air to the cyclone air filter and the CVT. Other niceties include limited slip front and dual-mode rear differentials, as well as the ability to add seating for two additional passengers.
